Being prepared for an emergency?
Q. How can I prepare for an emergency situation in an office environment?
Asked by zoe e - Sun Apr 27 21:26:00 2008 - Community Service - 1 Answers - Comments

A. Just a few things I can think of right off hand: Make sure everyone in your office knows where the fire extinguishers are and all exits are located. Also make sure they know how to use the fire extinguishers. You'd be surprised how many don't have a clue how to use them. Make sure you have a basic first aid kit in the office. Find out who in your office knows CPR and make sure everyone knows these contact people. And obviously keep the emergency phone #'s for Police Dept., Fire, Rescue by the phones. Make sure everyone in the office knows where these #'s are posted and post the Office phone # and address (some people tend to forget the obvious in emergency situations). Hope this is helpful.

In event of an emergency, how prepared are you?
Q. How easily would you be able to evacuate? How long would you be able to camp in your own house without electric or power? What special things would you need to take for your children? Medication? Special animal/blanket? Special diet? Anniversary of Katrina, approach of Earl to the East Coast, 9/11 anniversary coming up - all that is inspiring this Q.
Asked by pdooma - Wed Sep 1 11:58:40 2010 - Parenting - 12 Answers - Comments

A. I'm very prepared. It was Katrina and seeing how it took 2 weeks for some people to get supplies to get me to realize 3 days of food and water is no where near enough. We have a month's worth of food and water (that lasts for 5 years) plus supplies to sterilize more water and supplies to dig out if we needed to. (quakekare.com) We're in earthquake country, I know several ways out if we had to evacuate, Being in a large city though, traffic would be horrendous every way. We also have several other locations nearby where we could stay if we had to leave our house. We could camp in our house without power, I have a camping stove and gas and lots of flashlights and lanterns as well as a solar/crank radio with cell phone charger… [cont.]

Are you prepared for an emergency/natur al disaster?
Q. My family and I just finished updating our disaster kits. We live in an area that has the occasional earthquake -we have about 2 every couple of years that you can actually feel and 1 every 100 years or so that's big- in our kits we have 5 days worth of water, 3 days of food, 3 days of batteries, a radio, flash lights, gas generator, tools, 3 days worth of clothing, diapers, and lots of plastic bags among other things. We also have a disaster plan, where to meet, who to call out of state... How many of you, parents are ready for a disaster, house fire, or emergency?
Asked by Pipboy 3000 - Tue Dec 8 15:01:03 2009 - Parenting - 7 Answers - Comments

A. We were ready, but not so much now. I live in Florida, so hurricanes are our concern. Hurricane season is over so we use up whatever we had stockpiled and start rebuilding it in the spring. we do still have a gas generator, bottled water, batteries & food...but the supplies are slowly going down.

A. Prepare a Home Earthquake Plan Choose a safe place in every room--under a sturdy table or desk or against an inside wall where nothing can fall on you. Practice DROP, COVER, and hold on at least twice a year. Drop under a sturdy desk or table, hold on, and protect your eyes by pressing your face against your arm. If there's no table or desk nearby, sit on the floor against an interior wall away from windows, bookcases, or tall furniture that could fall on you. Teach children to DROP, COVER, and hold on! Choose an out-of-town family contact. Consult a professional to find out additional ways you can protect your home, such as bolting the house to its foundation and other structural mitigation techniques. Take a first aid class from your… [cont.]

A. I have 8 animals and think about this often. My birds are in large cages, so I have a spare small cage for them in the garage that I can put them in the car when a disaster might strike. My desert tortoise fits in a dog kennel that I keep in the garage for him My dogs, I have three of them, can ride in the car on our laps. I have their meds bagged up just in case. I keep extra food and lots of bottle water in the house. For the turlte, I can find him grass and flowers anywhere, that's what he eats. So i try to be as prepared as possible because I would never let myself be put in a position where I would have to leave my animals

How were root cellars used back in the day and how would I prepare mine now for an emergency/pande mic situatio?
Q. I have two root cellars in separate rooms with concrete walls off to the sides of my main cellar. I was thinking about preparing one of them in case of an emergency situation like a pandemic or other catastrophic event where my infant daughter and I would be stuck inside my basement for some time. Neither root cellar has any windows, just concrete walls and one currently has boards covering the dirt floor. I would very much appreciate the help and advice. Thanks! Oh, and I live in CT, if that helps.

A. First-aid kit and essential medications. Canned food and can opener. At least three gallons of water per person (one gallon of water per person for at least three days; often more is needed). Protective clothing, rainwear, and bedding or sleeping bags. For colder climates, make sure you have enough warm clothing. Battery-powered radio, flashlight, and extra batteries. A small amount of cash. Any special items, such as medications, required for infants, elderly, or disabled family members. Extra copies of all keys to your home and vehicles, as well as any keys for neighbors or other family members you may share responsability for. So are you prepared for an emergency such as earthquake, fire or flood?
Q. Do you have enough food and water stocked up to last three days? Or are you totally unprepared and keeping your fingers crossed?
Asked by - Sat Aug 16 19:49:18 2008 - Polls & Surveys - 18 Answers - Comments

A. Believe it or not I am prepared for just about any natural or man-made disaster that doesn't strike my immediate house. I have a 4 month supply of everything I need to make it through, including a generator and a 300 gallon tank of gas to run it. In this part of Minnesota, it's not unusual for a blizzard to hit and shut down the area for several weeks at a stretch and so we just naturally tend to be prepared for that kind of thing. The US is ill-prepared for emergency radiation but yet many want to build MORE nuclear power plants?
Q. Most American states are not prepared to cope with a major nuclear radiation event, said a study published Monday that happened to coincide with a feared nuclear disaster in quake-hit Japan. The survey of state health departments was conducted in 2010 and found that almost half of the 38 states that took part had no plan for protecting public health in the event of a radiation emergency. "Most states had completed little to no planning for public health surveillance to assess potential human health impacts of a radiation event," said the study in Disaster Medicine and Public Health Preparedness, a journal of the American Medical Association. Few states said they had the resources to test the public for radiation exposure. "Th [cont.]

What do you keep in your "emergency, end of the world" supplies, are you prepared "just in case"?
Q. I put this hear because an implosion of government is the only thing I can think of that would force one to be completely self reliant for a year, natural disaster would only leave people cut off for a few hours or days at the most This is a real question so don't put, "an ounce of P91 and a case of Coors" What do you have as your emergency back up as in the way of food, water, self defence, shelter... I live in a gated community on a golf course in So Cal, everyone I know keeps an "Earth quake kit" with food, water, communication, hygiene... I keep on hand at all times enough food for 4 people for 1 year at 1800-2200 calories a day, every year I donate my food supply to a homeless shelter and restock so nothing I have… [cont.]
