How do I move my iTunes library from one computer to another?
Q. I know this has been asked before, but I can't the information I need. I have about 1000 songs, about 200 videos (mostly podcasts) a single game, and 300 photos in my iTuned library. Some of them were imported from a CD, so they're in the iTunes folder (which is in "my music) but the others are scattered all over the place. I've tried the "consolidate my library" option, but I got a "filename is too long or invalid" message, and I have no idea what that means. So my problem is this... I want to just copy my iTunes music folder onto a large portable hard drive and bring it to my other computer, (which has iTunes installed) and import the whole thing. But then I don't know how to get all of my songs into one place, where my podcasts… [cont.]

A. What you can do is burn your library to a disk. You click on file and back up to disk. Then it will burn a couple of disks which you import into your new library.

How do you transfer your iTunes library to Rhapsody in full?
Q. I just got a blackberry storm and recently my ipod broke. I am really trying to transfer my entire iTunes library to rhapsody so I can put it on my phone. When I import my iTunes library through rhapsody it only transfers about half of the library. Is there any way to transfer the entire library to rhapsody or to some other program so I can have all my music on my phone? Thank you.

A. Anything you purchased in iTunes will not transfer to your Rhapsody library due to DRM placed in the files by Apple. That's how anti-piracy has hurt you, anybody else have a complaint? I have a few.

How do you Transfer your iTunes Library to another computer?
Q. I've recently had a few minor problems with my computer. These minor problems are beginning to evolve into major problems and I can't deal with it. I decided it's time to buy another computer. And the only problem that I have with this, is the hundreds of dollars spent on my iTunes Library will be lost. I wanted to know if anyone knows how to transfer my iTunes library to another computer once I've disposed of this one.

A. There are several ways to transfer your iTunes library to another computer. DO NOT rely on iTunes letting you download your purchases again, as this is against their official policy: I just transfered by iTunes library to another computer using an external hard drive. Here's how I did it: - 1. You may wish to consolidate your library first. Click "File", and under "Library" select "consolidate library". This will ensure that all the songs in your iTunes library are located in the "iTunes music" folder by copying files if necessary. - 2. Now open Windows explorer and locate the "iTunes Music" folder. It should be under Documents and Settings > [your username] > My Documents > My Music > iTunes. Copy this folder to your… [cont.]

A. You transfer a song to iTunes by going to File, Add file to library, and select the song file from there. However, the song files on ares are probably different to the iTunes files so you might not be able to play them.

A. Since you don't say whether or not you are using a mac or pc, I'm going to give the instructions for a PC, as that's the one I know. If you are using a mac, disregard this. The easiest way, depending on the size of the music library, is to use a USB drive. Simply copy the contents of the "iTunes Library" folder (My Docs->My Music->iTunes->iTunes Library, or close to that) to the flash drive. Then, on the new computer, just dump the files into the iTunes Library folder again (it should exist if you have iTunes installed). Then, open iTunes, and there should be an "import file" option under the "file" menu. It'll take a minute to import, and then you should be good to go. I think you might have to re-sync your ipod with the new… [cont.]

A. iTunes 7 offers a new way to back up your iTunes library, playlists, and iTunes Store purchases for safekeeping. The Back Up to Disc feature saves your media to a blank disc (CD or DVD) and once backed up, iTunes can use your backup disc(s) to automatically restore your iTunes library. The second link below offers a tutorial on how to back up your iTunes library, playlistst, etc. using an external hard drive or iPod. I wouldn't erase your library on your laptop because then you woudn't have a back up and it's not going to increase your performance.

A. You have a number of questions here, I'll try to answer each one individually: 1. To use firewire mode, you need to boot into what's called "target disk mode", this works on laptops I know of - and maybe imacs/mac pros/etc. The first link in the sources part will explain step-by-step how to do it (from apple's site) 2. To transfer your mac library only needs the Music/iTunes directory from your home folder. Should be a simple drag and drop, be sure to quit iTunes beforehand, and don't delete the original until you're sure that it opened and kept all your playlists/ratings/play counts. 3. The second link in the sources section explains how to do this. In my experience, it can only be done once you reach your maximum of 5 authorized… [cont.]

How do I move my iTunes library and music to my external hard drive?
Q. ..without it deleting all my ratings and other iTunes library stuff? I will want to leave iTunes on my internal drive but just move my music to the external one. Any tips?
Asked by Anna G. - Tue Jul 1 16:24:28 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If you're on PC, Go to the folder labeled "Your Music" From there is a folder labeled iTunes. Your iTunes songs are all located from there. To make it easier, once you have found the iTunes folder, just highlight and copy it. From there, connect your External hard drive, go to it from the "My Computer" icon, and hit paste. Everything contained in the folder (your library, ratings, videos, etc.) will be copied to the External hard drive while leaving the original version on the internal one.

Asked by Amanda - Tue Jul 14 12:17:42 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Here's one way to back up ALL the songs that appear in your iTunes library. See or follow the steps below: 1. Open iTunes and click File > Library > Consolidate Library. This ensures that all the songs in your iTunes library are actually in the "iTunes Music" folder by copying files as necessary. 2. Now find the "iTunes Music" folder. It's usually under Documents and Settings > [your username] > My documents > My Music > iTunes. Copy the "iTunes Music" folder to your flash drive. As you probably know, not all the songs in your iTunes library are necessarily located in the iTunes Music folder. Step 1 above solves this. You may get an error message if some songs cannot be found, or if the song's filename is too long. You'll… [cont.]

A. Windows media player won't play the AAC files that iTunes uses, UNLESS you download a plugin: If you prefer not to download the plugin, there are other options. I've used both methods below. Method 1. Use iTunes to convert the songs to MP3, then you can easily add these files to your Windows Media Player library. Here's how: In iTunes, click Edit > Preferences. Under the "general" tab, click "import settings" and select "MP3 encoder". Now right click on the songs you want, and select "create MP3 version". Now open Windows Media Player, and under the library tab, click "add to library". Then click "add" and locate the "iTunes Music" folder; usually it's under Documents and Settings > [your username] > My documents > My music >… [cont.]

A. Backing up iTunes will backup everything in your library/music folders. I don't think they have an option to backup just the songs in your library, you'll have to poke around the backup options. Sorry, no way to keep the meta data.

A. You won't really see an option to re-scan your iTunes library. Just make sure that the Ringtone column is turned on (Open-Apple-J on your keyboard), and in that column, iTunes will tell you if a song has a ringtone download available. Out of my 2800 songs, only about 75 have ringtones available.

A. Yes. The most convenient and secure way is to use an iPod transfer program to help you, like this handy one Many of my friends are using it for its easy and safe transfer. With just a few simple clicks, it will help you transfer all songs/videos from iPod to your selected folder on your computer, and then you can also easily add those files back to your new iTunes. More importantly, this won't overwrite any original files on your iPod. And all song titles are preserved. Here is the step-by-step guide on the whole process: Best luck!
