Europe (pronounced /ˈjɜrəp/, /ˈjʊərəp/) is, by convention, one of the world's seven continents. Comprising the westernmost peninsula of Eurasia, Europe is generally divided from Asia to its east by the water divide of the Ural Mountains, the Ural River, the Caspian Sea, and by the Caucasus Mountains to the southeast. Europe is washed upon to the north by the Arctic Ocean and other bodies of water, to the west by the Atlantic Ocean, to the south by the Mediterranean Sea, and to the southeast by the Black Sea and the waterways connecting it to the Mediterranean. Yet the borders for Europe—a concept dating back to classical antiquity—are somewhat arbitrary, as the term continent can refer to a cultural and political distinction or a physiographic one.

Europe is the world's second-smallest continent by surface area, covering about 10,180,000 square kilometres (3,930,000 sq mi) or 2% of the Earth's surface and about 6.8% of its land area. Of Europe's approximately 50 states, Russia is the largest by both area and population, while the Vatican City is the smallest. Europe is the third most populous continent after Asia and Africa, with a population of 731 million or about 11% of the world's population; however, according to the United Nations (medium estimate), Europe's share may fall to about 7% in 2050.

Europe, in particular Ancient Greece, is often considered to be the birthplace of Western culture. It played a predominant role in global affairs from the 16th century onwards, especially after the beginning of colonialism. Between the 17th and 20th centuries, European nations controlled at various times the Americas, most of Africa, Oceania, and large portions of Asia. Both World Wars were ignited in Central Europe, greatly contributing to a decline in European dominance in world affairs by the mid-20th century as the United States and Soviet Union took prominence. During the Cold War Europe was divided along the Iron Curtain between NATO in the West and the Warsaw Pact in the East. European integration led to the formation of the Council of Europe and the European Union in Western Europe, both of which have been expanding eastward since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991.

What is the best place in europe to live for a year and work?
Q. My friends and I are planning to move to Europe for a year and work. I was wondering which place would be the best to live.
Asked by bigshot226 - Tue Dec 12 23:00:18 2006 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I have lived in a few different European countries. My favorite so far, by far, has been Vienna, Austria. I speak German, but even if you don't, most people there can speak English, and because there are lots of tourists, some things are in English, too. It's a beautiful old city, lots of fun to see/live in. I was there for four years. With public transportation, you pretty much don't even need a car. And if you need to travel somewhere else, trains are great, and not too expensive. Also, Austria borders on 7 other countries. So it's easy to go out and see new places. It's also a very clean city, unlike other large cities.

How expensive is travel to central Europe?
Q. I am planning on going on a vacation to visit some friends in Slovakia during the middle of this coming summer. How expensive are the flights normally to that part of Europe? Does anyone have any suggestions on the cheapest way to get there? I'm not looking for first class service on my airfare. Just something to get me from point A to B safely and soundly.

A. I think your flight will be the most expensive thing you pay for. Its very cheap in Slovakia, esp with the currency exchange. One reason why I loved Eastern Europe, everything was so cheap. I would recommand heading to Croatia, beautiful beaches and dirt cheap!!! Also, try finding flights to your bigger cities that are close by and then see how much it costs to take a train out there, or even Ryan Air or Easy Jet from there, and see if its cheaper that way, too. But that time of year is going to be expensive b/c thats peak season for flying. Good luck.

What are the reason Christianity spread so fast in Europe during the middle ages?
Q. Is it because ancient European's cult practices are like being an atheist and that is why Christianity influences them so fast? I was also thinking of today's situation where Europe is becoming more secular and Islam is spreading in Europe. For this reason, Muslims can easily influence and convert Europeans into Muslims as well, isnt it? Please give me some details.

A. it spread because it was not a free democracy like we have today. If the king shows up with an army and says be baptized or die. that causes very fast conversion rate. these conversions may not be all that sincere, but fear will keep people quit about there own beliefs mean while publicly all agreeing with what the church says. Children raised hearing only the public thoughts of the adults, and going to the state sanctioned church will be christian.

Europe is one of the traditional seven political continents, and a peninsular sub-continent of the geographic continent Eurasia.
