Brake

A brake is a mechanical device which inhibits motion. Its opposite component is a clutch. The rest of this article is dedicated to various types of vehicular brakes. Most commonly brakes use friction to convert kinetic energy into heat, though other methods of energy conversion may be employed. For example regenerative braking converts much of the energy to electrical energy, which may be stored for later use. Other methods convert kinetic energy into potential energy in such stored forms as pressurized air or pressurized oil. Eddy current brakes use magnetic fields to convert kinetic energy into electric current in the brake disc, fin, or rail, which is converted into heat. Still other braking methods even transform kinetic energy into different forms, for example by transferring the energy to a rotating flywheel. Brakes are generally applied to rotating axles or wheels, but may also take other forms such as the surface of a moving fluid (flaps deployed into water or air). Some vehicles use a combination of braking mechanisms, such as drag racing cars with both wheel brakes and a parachute, or airplanes with both wheel brakes and drag flaps raised into the air during landing. Since kinetic energy increases quadratically with velocity (K = mv / 2), an object traveling at 10 meters per second has 100 times as much energy as one traveling at 1 meter per second, and consequently the theoretical braking distance, when braking at the traction limit, is 100 times as long. In practice, fast vehicles usually have significant air drag, and energy lost to air drag rises quickly with speed. Almost all wheeled vehicles have a brake of some sort. Even baggage carts and shopping carts may have them for use on a moving ramp. Most fixed-wing aircraft are fitted with wheel brakes on the undercarriage. Some aircraft also feature air brakes designed to reduce their speed in flight. Notable examples include gliders and some World War II-era aircraft, primarily some fighter aircraft and many dive bombers of the era. These allow the aircraft to maintain a safe speed in a steep descent. The Saab B 17 dive bomber used the deployed undercarriage as an air brake. Friction brakes on automobiles store braking heat in the drum brake or disc brake while braking then conduct it to the air gradually. When traveling downhill some vehicles can use their engines to brake. When the brake pedal of a modern vehicle with hydraulic brakes is pushed, ultimately a piston pushes the brake pad against the brake disc which slows the wheel down. On the brake drum it is similar as the cylinder pushes the brake shoes against the drum which also slows the wheel down. From Wikipedia under the

From Google Video Search: "brake" What is the brake valve assembly near the driver rear wheel on a 2000 Town and Country? It bridged the brakes? Q. It bridges the brake lines from the master cylinder and the rear brakes. It is in back and has no connection to the front brake assemblies. Part Number P4721533. Asked by TandC Driver - Mon Dec 29 21:06:16 2008 - Maintenance & Repairs - 4 Answers - Comments A. I have no idea but I have been a shade tree mechanic for 50 years and if I had to guess I would think it was part of the ABS on your car. A second thought, since the front wheels do most of the breaking this could be in place to prevent excessive rear wheel breaking. Not as in the ABS method but simply limit the pressure to the rear wheels. When I split the brake system on a 65 Ford the rear brakes would lock almost immediately. I had to put a sort of pressure regulator on the rear lines to make things work as they were supposed to. Have you run the part number against some of the search engines? Another method might be to look at some chat rooms for help. Good luck. Answered by gimpalomg - Mon Dec 29 21:19:36 2008 How serious is my brake problem, or are they trying to cheat me?
Q. I took my car in to get the tires rotated, balanced and aligned today and got a call that apparently the guy noticed a squeaking when he pulled the car in and they checked and my front callipers are leaking brake fluid. Apparently I need new callipers, new brake pads and a brake fluid flush and it is going to be over $700. I have not noticed any difference in my brake performance, any noise from them, or any leaking fluids but this guy told me that brake fluid does leak because of the high tempature it just gums up. I looked around on the internet and it sounds like it would be leaking and I would be able to see it. I need opinions as to whether it should be leaking and this guy is just trying to make money off of me or if this sounds… [cont.] Asked by Holly H - Wed Aug 15 13:22:46 2007 - Maintenance & Repairs - 12 Answers - Comments A. If the front caliper is truly leaking fluid, they should be able to disassemble it and show you were the fluid is leaking, or show you that your brake pads are saturated with brake fluid. Brake fluid does leak, and you may not see the leak on the ground as brake fluid may combine with the brake dust generated in the area by the brake pads. I would definitely get a second opinion, but if the brake caliper is leaking, it does need to be either rebuilt or replaced. If the caliper gets replaced, you'll need to get the brakes bleed (or as he's calling it brake fluid flushed) and new pads. Over $700 sounds a tad steep, but it depends on the cost of your calilper for your car, some brake calipers can be real expensive (excluding the actual… [cont.] Answered by hsueh010 - Wed Aug 15 13:39:17 2007 From Yahoo Answer Search: "brake" |
